Flexible Grid Line System (FlexILS)

Unleash the power of your transport network – automate everything!

Infinera FlexILS flexible grid line system is the industry’s most widely deployed flexible grid open optical line system. It enhances the scalability, flexibility and programmability of Intelligent Transport Networks. FlexILS is fully open and interoperable with Infinera and third-party terminals. It provides the following features:

  • Higher spectral efficiency with future-proof flexible grid architecture
  • Efficient bandwidth management and flexibility with multi-layer switching
  • Modular super-channel flexible reconfigurable optical add-drop multiplexer (FlexROADM) with unconstrained switching in the optical layer
  • Full automation with Generalized Multi-Protocol Label Switching (GMPLS)-based unified control plane

Future-proof your network with ITU-T flexible grid channel plan. FlexILS uses the International Telecommunication Union’s Telecommunication Standardization Sector (ITU-T) flexible grid channel plan with granularity of 12.5 gigahertz (GHz), allowing efficient packing of any combination of optical carriers, modulations and data rate on the same optical fiber, and enabling over 50 terabits per second (50T) of capacity over optical fiber with terabit super-channels. FlexILS combines FlexCoherent® technology with multiple modulation formats, including matrix-enhanced phase-shift keying (ME-PSK), 3 quadrature amplitude modulation (3QAM), quadrature phase-shift keying (QPSK), 8QAM and 16QAM, along with a new generation of coherent-optimized erbium-doped fiber amplifiers (EDFAs) and Raman amplifiers to provide industry-leading optical performance across terrestrial and subsea networks.

Multi-layer switching architecture. FlexILS, when deployed with the DTN-X XTC Series, provides the benefits of a multi-layer switching architecture: Optical Transport Network (OTN) switching for efficient packing of client services and super-channel-based optical switching for operational simplicity and flexibility of express traffic. FlexILS can also be deployed with the DTN-X XT Series for long-haul and regional interconnect applications and enables capital expenditure savings through optical bypass of traffic and avoiding switching at higher layers when it is not required.

Infinera’s super-channel FlexROADM can support flexible grid super-channels with single-channel granularity and utilizes six times fewer fibers than conventional ROADMs. It provides unconstrained optical switching by eliminating the restrictions of fixed wavelengths per port (colorless), allows any wavelength to be added or dropped to or from any direction (directionless) and enables multiple copies of the same wavelength on a single add/drop structure (contentionless) for a comprehensive C/CD/CDC solution up to 20 degrees. The FlexROADM also meets all target requirements for a future-proof open line system, enabling support for third-party terminals and alien wavelengths with flexible channel spacing and signal rates and fine-grained, automated power monitoring and control.

Automate everything. Infinera’s Intelligent Transport Network product portfolio is fully interoperable over the Infinera FlexILS flexible grid open line system and is managed in a unified manner using the Infinera Management Suite featuring Digital Network Administrator (DNA). Designed for multi-layer networks and unified software-defined networking (SDN) control across the entire Infinera portfolio, Infinera’s Xceed Software Suite is powered by open source software and interfaces with third-party solutions via open application programming interfaces (APIs) to provide revenue-ready applications for agile, assured orchestration of new services.

The Infinera FlexILS utilizes dedicated photonic chassis, the MTC-9 and the compact MTC-6 chassis, which provide a common platform to deliver four-port, nine-port and 20-port super-channel FlexROADM, meshponder and optical line amplifier (OLA) functionalities.
